First Friday is a stage for local merchants & restaurants in Portsmouth's Historic Olde Towne and one of the city's most popular evening escapes. Held the first Friday of each month, Olde Towne Portsmouth's thriving arts & antiques community opens it's doors along the 12 historic squares of High Street located between Effingham Street and the riverfront where crowds of casual browsers as well as serious buyers come to each festive event to visit our fine art galleries, quality antique shops and unique specialty stores, some host receptions and art exhibition openings.

First Friday is held each month, rain or shine, year round. There is no admission fee for First Friday - participating galleries are open to the public.

The Olde Towne Antiques to Flea Market is conveniently located in the Middle Street Garage at the corner of Middle & London streets and is held year round, rain or shine on the first Saturday of each month. Celebrating Local Native American History & Culture

Discover what life along the river was like for the first citizens of Portsmouth, the Chesapeake Indians. At the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, see real artifacts and learn about the daily use of tools of the Chesapeakes as you try your hand using their tools. In the museum’s Discovery Cove, make your own pinch pots and turtle shell cups. At the Lightship PORTSMOUTH learn the skill of boat building and make your own model canoe. Throughout the day learn and play Native American games!

"Molly's Pilgrim"
Children’s movie and workshop at the Jewish Museum

2 to 4 p.m. In anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday, the Academy Award-winning movie “Molly’s Pilgrim” – followed by a “make-and-take” activity for children.

After the film, participating families will discuss their own roots, such as how they came to America and how they are similar to Pilgrims. Each family will then receive a “Build-A-Pilgrim” kit containing a bear, fabric squares, buttons, beads and ribbons. Family members will be asked to dress their bear in clothes similar to those worn by their ancestors when they came to the United States.

Re-enactor portrays son of Jewish immigrants at the Jewish Museum & Cultural Center

2 to 4 p.m. Paul Johnson, a local re-enactor, will portray a character he calls "Ruben Leffik," the son of Lithuanian immigrants who settled in Portsmouth at the turn of the 20th century. Though the story of Ruben's life is fictional, Johnson weaves in historically accurate facts about Portsmouth's thriving Jewish commercial community during the early 1900s.

25th Annual Grand Illumination Parade (Downtown Norfolk)

7 p.m. Celebrate the Season with our parade. It all kicks off with the spectacular illumination of the Downtown Norfolk and Olde Towne Portsmouth skylines. The City of Portsmouth is a major sponsor and will have a float in the parade.

Winter Wonderland: The Coleman Collection

Now in its fifth year at the Courthouse Galleries, Winter Wonderland has settled into its new surroundings. Begin your holiday and New Year countdown with Holidays Around the World, which celebrates diverse cultures and traditions from many nations. Watch for the Snow Babies frolicking nearby in the courtyard.

Each year, newly renovated figures add to the enchantment of visitors and remind young and old of holidays past. Scenes from a Victorian era offer a Chalet with animated carolers, strollers and skaters. Fanciful elves prepare their treats at Santa’s Bakery and Candy Shop, while more of his crew ready by constructing toys and wrapping gifts for distribution.

View other holiday favorites such as Sleeping Santa, representative of one of the first figures that launched the Coleman collection during the 1960s. On special weekends, the inaugural Singing Santa returns to rejoice audiences with seasonal songs.
