The City of Portsmouth Presents
DESIGN WEEK #1

Over the course of the next twelve months, the City of Portsmouth will prepare its first Form Based Code for two significant gateway corridors – High Street and London Boulevard, from Downtown to Midtown. The Form Based Code will guide redevelopment and will guide implementation of certain goals and strategies found within Destination 2025, the City’s Comprehensive Plan.

Design Week logoThe new Code will regulate development to ensure high-quality public spaces defined by a variety of building types and uses including housing, retail, and office space. The new Code will incorporate a regulating plan, building form standards, street standards, use regulations as needed, descriptive building and/or lot types, and other elements needed to implement the principles of functional and vital urbanism and practical management of growth.

The goal is to create a tool (Form Based Code) that will help foster good design and ease the process for development and/or redevelopment by providing a regulatory framework in clear and graphic terms that is easy to understand and utilize.

A journey thrugh time: America’s Influence on Hip-Hop Culture

This presentation focuses on live performances that offer a comparison between the ancient call-and-response folklore traditions of West African griots (gree-ohs), Early to Mid 20th Century Jazz Age Poets from the Harlem Renaissance, and the modern phenomenon of Hip-Hop’s ‘Rap’ Music. The presentations will feature live West African percussion, traditional folktales, and a mock Hip-Hop MC ‘battle’ of lyrics.

N.O. S.E.N.S.E.: A Vignette Performance

This short play serves as a tribute to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African American Professor who pioneered Black History Month in the 1920s with the first National Negro History Week. In this dramatic presentation, three teenagers will learn the true story behind African American History Month, which helps them to dispel the myths and urban legends stating that February was ‘given’ to African Americans to celebrate their culture as an insult, because it is the shortest month of the year.

The City of Portsmouth Presents
DESIGN WEEK #2

The Downtown and Waterfront area is a major center of activity for the City as well as the greater region as a whole and one of Portsmouth’s most visible assets. This area also supports the greatest concentration of mixed uses in the City. Given its prominent place in our City – it is vital that we continue to focus on coordinated and sustained growth for the downtown and waterfront.

Design Week logoOver the course of the next twelve months, the City will work closely with Portsmouth’s citizens to develop a Downtown Master Plan (DMP) to guide the continued development of the downtown area as a vibrant, walkable, mixed-use urban center. The plan will be based on clear and established principles and values – and a shared vision that will guide future growth and development in the downtown and along the waterfront.
